Non-powered overlays are devices placed directly over a mattress. They utilize air, foam, gel, water, wool, or other materials and have a base thickness of 2 to 5 inches. Depending on their composition, they may help reduce friction and shear. Indicated for patients with limited mobility, major risk factors, or any stage pressure injury.
Non-powered overlays are therapeutic support surfaces placed directly over a standard mattress. Non-powered mattress overlays utilize air, foam, gel, water, wool or other materials and have a base thickness of 2 to 5 inches. Depending on their composition, they may help reduce friction and shear.
Non-powered mattress overlays feature the following general performance properties and attributes:
• Reduces and pressure, friction and shear forces
• Fits over standard mattresses
• Does not require a power source
• Lightweight and portable compared to powered overlays
• Helps reduce heat and skin moisture buildup
Non-powered mattress overlays are indicated for patients with limited mobility, major risk factors or any stage pressure ulcer to prevent skin breakdown and aid in offloading of at-risk areas by redistributing pressure. Some specialty overlays are indicated for the prevention of pressure ulcer formation during surgery or transport.
Non-powered overlays are contraindicated for use on unstable spinal fractures or for cervical traction.
