Tips for Implementing the CTP LCD in Your Practice

Seismic changes to Medicare coverage for cellular and/or tissue-based products (CTPs/skin substitutes) for skin wounds will soon be implemented by the Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs). Their new evidence-based Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs) and Local Coding and Billing Articles (LCAs) impact product selection, utilization, documentation, coding, and billing. Educating your team about the new coverage guidelines, aligning your formulary of CTPs, refining your processes, improving your documentation, updating your electronic health record, and (when necessary) switching your patients to a “covered” CTP cannot be left until the April 13, 2025 implementation date.
To assist you in navigating the multi-faceted implementation process, Kathleen Schaum, MS will interview two wound/ulcer management professionals. Gayle M. Gordillo, MD will share the steps that the 19 UPMC wound healing provider-based departments have already completed. Kara Couch, MS, CRNP will share the processes that she and her team at George Washington University Hospital refined.
Whether you are in the middle of implementation planning, haven’t yet started, or consider yourself ready for the new CTP policies, the insights and implementation tips should prove invaluable to you and your team. In addition, the three webinar faculty members will answer your specific implementation questions during the live Q & A session.
Objectives:
- Recognize the importance of team education and communication regarding the new LCD/LCA.
- Understand the steps required to refine your CTP formulary.
- Plan to transition Medicare beneficiaries from non-covered to covered CTPs.
- Initiate a tracking process to count the number of CTP applications each ulcer receives and to use the KX modifier appropriately.
- Refine documentation of standard of care, treatment plan, assessment, operative/procedure note, and wastage.
