An August 2024 study provided a scoping review of medical device-related pressure injuries (MDRPI) during surgical procedures.1 They reviewed literature from 2014 and later, both in English and Chinese languages. This included 14 research studies and 2 studies on quality improvement.1

They found that MDRPIs had an incidence between 0.56 and 24.5%.1 The most common medical devices discussed in the literature were respiratory devices. They also identified common risk factors mentioned among the studies, including body mass index (BMI), age, and length of surgery.1 The most commonly discussed prevention pathways were prophylactic dressings and dressing maintenance.1

The authors felt the current body of evidence would benefit from more research and data on MDRPIs in the surgical setting, including incidence, risk factors, and successful prevention options.1 They advocated for nurses and other health care professionals learning about risks for MDRPI, and to participate in prevention strategies.1
